General Function: 

The Truancy and Dropout Prevention Advisor will work collaboratively with the site principal and leadership team, families, city, county, and state agencies to improve attendance for habitually truant students and decrease the number of students dropping out of school. 

 

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum:  Level ll Teacher License

Preferred: Student Succes Advisor, Counselor, Social Worker or Administrator License

 

 

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:  

Knowledge of New Mexico’s Early Warning System (EWS) and ability to apply a tiered system of support to keep all students on the path to graduation.  Must be able to implement the following effective truancy and dropout reduction programs:  community collaboration, family involvement, prevention, intervention and retrieval, incentives and sanctions, supportive context, and program evaluation.  Demonstrated organizational, communication, management, and interpersonal skills required to achieve goals of the position.

 

Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):  

Standard office equipment.  Basic Office Computer program abilities. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher)

 

 

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:  

Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; communicate verbally and electronically; reach with hands and arms; stand and move throughout the building and/or to other facilities, and drive.  Occasionally required to lift and/or exert force of up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Environmental Conditions:  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Travel to facilities throughout the district is integral to the job.

Essential Job Functions:

 

  1. Familiarize self with truancy and dropout prevention strageties. 
  2. Using the Early Warning System (EWS), design whole-school preventative measures for 70-80% of the student              population (Tier 1), target interventions for 10-20% of students, (Tier 2), and intensive interventions for 5-10% of           students with greatest need (Tier 3).
  3. Design and implement the following effective truancy and dropout reduction programs: community                  collaboration, family involvement, prevention, intervention and retrieval, incentives and sanctions, supportive                context, and program evaluation. “Champion” EWS at the school site.
  4. Maintain ongoing log of the following data for end of year Performance Report: data on number of students  served; truancy and dropout statistics for the district and for the school you are assigned to; documentation of various events and programming provided by the school as related to truancy and dropout prevention.
  5. Establish, build and maintain “case files” for all students entering Tier 2.
  6. Participate with teams in the development of Academic/Success Improvement Plans.
  7. Establish relationships with school community partners which provide social and emotional support to students.
  8. Assist in planning the Interim Superintendent’s Fall Truancy Summit.
  9. With the principal and her leadership team, plan “Family Nights” throughout the school year (minimally 5).
  10. Provide support to students who are long-term suspended and report to Day Reporting.
  11. Solicit donations from the community to be used as a reward system approach for attendance.
  12. Meet with the Superintendent or her designee once/month to provide a report of school actions and activities and accompanying data.
  13. Participate in monthly PLC meetings with other coaches, focused on the grant.

 

Personal Accountability:

 

  1. Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
  2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/special application,
  6. Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
